While smart phone devices and tablets have certainly had a significant impact in field and remote GIS data collection, there are times when a more functional & powerful solution is needed, especially when working in remote areas with limited data connectivity. With Simple GIS Client, you have a powerful GIS software program that is lightweight enough to install and run on a variety of Windows laptops or Windows tablet devices. The Simple GIS Client application gives you the ability to run a full featured GIS in the field using offline data. Not only can you use your own offline data with Simple GIS Client, but it also has built in data wizards allowing you to download fully routable and geocoded street map data sets for your US state of interest to your local machine, or use the built in USGS data wizard to download freely available data from the USGS Department to your local machine. In addition, Simple GIS can interface with GPS devices that support the NMEA 0183 protocol or the Windows 10 sensor API. With an inexpensive GPS receiver, users can track their current position, record their locations as breadcrumbs, or even use the street map datasets for routing and turn by turn navigation on their field device. This video tutorial demonstrates using the “Street Map – Local routable and geocoded detailed street map” project template to download and create a Simple GIS Client project for offline use. The tutorial also demonstrates connecting and configuring an external GPS receiver via a device’s USB port for GPS tracking, recording breadcrumbs, and navigation. Using Simple GIS Client on a Windows laptop or Windows tablet device provides a powerful and robust field GIS mapping software application.
