Hillshading is a common technique in GIS software packages to visualize terrain as shaded relief. In hillshading, each cell in a raster image is illuminated by a light source and it's illumination value is calculated based upon slope and aspect. By creating and utilizing hillshading, users can add a perception of depth and create more aesthetically pleasing maps. With the Simple GIS Client, GIS mapping software, users can easily create hillshade raster imagery based on elevation datasets. Simple GIS Client supports elevation datasets in either single-band tiff images or DEM file format. In addition, users easily adjust the Azimuth, or orientation of the light source (sun) as well as the altitude of the light source above the horizon to achieve various effects. This video demonstrates the process of creating a gray scale as well as a color gradient hillshade image from an elevation data source, in this case, a single-band tiff image. In addition, in Simple GIS Client, users can choose to create a hillshade for a single elevation dataset or select several elevation datasets and create shaded relief images for each dataset in one batch operation.
