Xfce can customized as you wish. There are many customizations that you can try.
As for me, I like to make it:
1) dark theme - to make me comfortable.
2) show speaker icon - to make adjustment of volume mixer
3) show network - to inform me about network connections and available network connections for Wifi networks etc.
