5 Practical Tips for Socializing on the Autoimmune Protocol Diet

Having done the AIP elimination phase a few times now–here are the top 5 things I’ve learned:

1. Be responsible for your own food
Expect that you will have to fend for yourself. What I mean by this is that society is not set up to cater to us AIPers.
It is wise to always have a backup plan (carry non-perishables with you always, and bring a prepared meal if you will be out for more than a few hours)

2. Take time to plan and prepare: this will look different depending on the situation, whether it’s a picnic, potluck, wedding, or some kind of travel. Here are a few tips:
*Eat a nourishing meal before going out -something that will sustain you for at least a few hrs
*Look at menus & call restaurants in advance with questions
*Speak with a host/hostess about party details so you can plan accordingly
*Contribute to a group meal by bringing an AIP-friendly dish
*Choose a restaurant or activity that works for where you currently are on your journey. This may mean doing something that doesn't involve food.

3. Focus on what you CAN have. The "I can’t" attitude will only leave you feeling crappy. There are tons of foods you can have on AIP and when you put your focus there you have the potential to feel satisfied rather than deprived.

4. Eat things you ENJOY.
Find simple recipes that are similar to the meals you are accustomed to. AIP tacos, waffles, stir fry, pizza, chicken strips, and specific ethnic dishes. Pinterest is a great one-stop shop for searching for these recipes.
Don't force yourself to eat things that turn you off.

5. Treat yourself! What are you excited to eat? Maybe it's some root veggie chips, meat jerky, or a homemade AIP treat like AIP ice cream. Or maybe it’s getting your nails done or buying a new dress for the event you're attending. When you focus on what will make you feel good you are less likely to fall off the wagon.
If you are on a modified AIP diet maybe you decide ahead of time that you will have a glass of wine or gluten-free dessert.
