You may have heard that following the Paleo Diet means eating the foods that our ancestors consumed during the paleolithic era when hunting and gathering were the ways that humans acquired their food.

Another way to describe the paleo diet is: a way of eating focused on nutrient density.

The more nutrients per calorie of food, the more nutrient-dense it is.

So what exactly do you eat on the paleo diet?

This can be broken down into 3 main categories:

1. Proteins
2. Fruits and Vegetables
3. Healthy fats

1. PROTEINS: the most common include chicken, beef, turkey, pork, and seafood
But there are a whole host of other options like wild game.

You will also want to include things like collagen, bone broth and organ meats. Organ meats are the most nutrient-dense foods you can eat.

2. FRUITS AND VEGETABLES:
There are literally hundreds of varieties of fruits and vegetables to choose from. Depending on your health goals you may be looking for fruits lower in sugar such as berries.

The Paleo Diet does not have to be low-carb. Your starches will, however, come from fruits and vegetables rather than grains and legumes.

Some paleo starchy carbs include sweet potato, cassava, and taro root. For a complete list download The Paleo Quickstart Guide. (PaleoQuickstartGuide.com)

3. HEALTHY FATS:

You will consume fats through the animal proteins you eat.

Additional sources of fat include:
-Nuts
-Seeds
-Avocados
-Olives
-Coconut
*And the oils derived from these foods

You may be wondering about the foods not mentioned here: dairy, grain and legumes. These are avoided on the paleo diet because they are more likely to cause inflammation. Some folks do consume eggs and clarified butter or ghee on the Paleo diet. This is going to be a matter of preference.

For those using the Paleo diet to improve symptoms related to autoimmune disease or chronic illness, you will want to follow the autoimmune version of Paleo (AIP) very closely at the beginning as your body heals. There are a few important distinctions with this version of Paleo, which I cover in my free mini-course EatToHeal. You can find that link below.

My best piece of advice for eating Paleo: focus on the foods you CAN have. There are thousands of paleo recipes online. I have created several boards on Pinterest ranging from comfort foods to baked goods, dressings and sauces. You can find me on Pinterest: Whitney Coupland.
