I posted some videos of a robot I built for FLL competition and had some requests to share the design. Here it is.

I was inspired to build a modular robot after viewing a video of a European team using something similar for the "Food Factor" challenge. This particular robot is about six years old, built originally for an NXT, and it has seen several minor changes in subsequent years to accommodate the changing challenges of FLL. The original objective of this design was to build a 3-motor robot that took up the least possible space. One special feature is that all three motors can be accessed from above or below, allowing attachments to be placed on top of the robot when design considerations make that the better approach. More recently the robot has been given over to an EV3 controller, allowing the use of a gyroscopic sensor and a forth motor (the motor is on a mount that allows it to be moved from machine to machine if needed).

A careful study of this video should enable most Lego builders to replicate this robot, and anybody is welcome to do so. Building a robot like this is not hard; building machines that utilize this design is the real challenge. However, this offers a genuine change from the "box" designs that have taken over FLL competition, and the flexibility that this design enables may give teams a competitive edge over more monolithic robots.
