Also to show how “professional” motion designers are far from infallible. If we’re trying something new we have to research, experiment and often get things wrong. Sometimes it can lead to interesting, unexpected results. Sometimes it can lead to ulcers.

This was a logo animation for a singer called Jodie Langford: https://www.instagram.com/jodielangfo...
There was no real brief, except for something with a "punky aesthetic".
I basically ripped off the way Hobie Brown is animated in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. This was the reference for the cutout style and type effects.
I also looked at “punk” films from the 70s / 80s, such as Breaking Glass (1980), Suburbia (1983), Rude Boy (1980), Sid and Nancy (1986) and others. Partly for research beyond just looking at Spider Punk, but also the plan was to collage elements from some of these films into some kind of tableau.
But the job was unpaid, so instead I narrowed the scope down to collaging a scene from a film called Times Square (1980) where two characters throw tvs off a roof in New York. The footage is heavily treated in a similar way to Across the Spider-Verse, and then resolves to Jodie’s logo at the end.
I essentially viewed this as a “proof of concept” to see how well I could pull off this style, and it’s something I want to explore in future projects.
