Islamic life in Moldova can be said to be less fortunate, because Muslims there are less free to carry out their worship.
The number of mosques in Moldova is not well known because many of the mosques in Moldova were forcibly closed by the government. In 2000, the Moldovan government rejected Islam as the state's official religion considering that 93% of the total population belonged to the Eastern Orthodox Church. Until 2002, a mosque imam rented 3 places for Friday prayers. In the same year, Moldovan Muslims had their identities checked when going to pray and recorded them, resulting in many mosques in Moldova being closed again. This is what makes Moldova a country with a very high and strong level of Islamophobia.
