The life of Muslims in Hong Kong can be said to be quite calm and peaceful, because they can carry out their worship freely without any pressure and intimidation from the Hong Kong Government.
Islam in Hong Kong is a minority religion. Of the total population of 7,050,000 people, 126,900 people or 1.8% of the total population are Muslims.
The Muslim community arrived in Hong Kong, including China, more than 1,000 years ago and was brought by a community of Arab traders who brought their goods to sell across the silk route that connected China with the western world. The development of Islam in Hong Kong reached its peak when Pakistani and Indian Muslims were employed as British soldiers to guard this area. Hong Kong was once a British colony, before being handed back to China in 1997. The number of adherents of Islam is growing rapidly with many minority Chinese communities converting to Islam. This minority Chinese group became known as the "Hui". History records that the development of Islam in China, including Hong Kong, has been going on for centuries.
