To Launch Facebook settings
Click on the drop down arrow in top right and select Privacy settings
Click on timeline and tagging.
Just to explain the terminology briefly. Your timeline is what was previously known as your wall. -essentially its your personal area and it shows a record of your online activity in the time period since you've been on Facebook.
So the first one - who can add things to your timeline, there are only two options here - friends or only me. Now you would only select only me if you didn't want anyone to post on your wall or even comment on anything you do on Facebook which when you think about it really goes against the purpose of being on Facebook in the first place so the recommendation would be to leave it as friends.
There are two options for something called tagging. Tagging is where someone mentions your name in one of their posts by putting the @character in front of it or you are in a picture and they tag your name in it - And this would mean that a post could appear on your timeline as well as their own timeline. So you have an option here - to review posts friends tag you in before they appear on your timeline. So you get some control about what gets displayed on your wall. So I would suggest it is worth doing that enabling it (click on drop down arrow and click enable), particularly where you have certain friends who tag you in numerous posts and it fills up your own wall and you can't even see your own posts. There is another option further down here -How can I manage tags people add - review tags people add to your own posts .
So this is where you've put the post on and they've tagged other people in their comments which means your post could be shared outside of your control, so again I would recommend that you also enable that review option.
Who can see things on my timeline ? This is your chance to see how your timeline looks to other people. Click on view as - this is how a public facebook user would see it . Notice that they don't see an add friend option - only friends can send requests - privacy settings have been configured to say only people already in my network can add me as a friend. View it as a specific person - in this case Paul Wilson - you can see that the friend can see all your posts and can suggest other friends to you Its a useful thing to review what it is that you've got publicly displayed at any given time. Particularly as Facebook from time to time does make changes to the security settings , you will be notified about them but its always good to check on these things.
OK so back in timeline and tagging who can see posts you've been tagged in on your timeline? - thats set to everyone by default I would recommend changing it to just friends. Similarly who can see what others post on your timeline - I would also recommend limiting it to friends.
One final option - When you are tagged in a post who do you want to add to the audience if they aren't already in it? - you could change it to only me, as the most limited option available.
So those are my recommendations. Remember these are best practices and your privacy settings can vary over time depending on how comfortable you are with your set up. From the outset, try to put practical limits in place, see how they work and then you can enable things, rather than the other way round where everything's open and you go from that into an unmanageable situation. So this is you taking full control of your configuration.
