A spectacular afternoon at Mooloolaba, fully sheltered from any wind and with virtually no swell around you could have paddled a K1.

I paddled out and towards the end of my warm up I was pleasantly surprised to find a light but steady South Easterly wind once I rounded the headland at Point Cartwright. The breeze had created some small but direct runs which got me excited for a paddle back.

Mondays are my regular pyramid sessions which I didn’t want to neglect despite a race against time to beat the sun so I did 2 of my 3 sets straight out into the wind and turned to do my third set with the runners. I rarely do this session in the ocean and when I have it’s never been with any runners and I was really surprised to learn that it’s actually a whole lot harder with the runs. The really high intensity efforts meant that I was coming down a run and then up the back of the one in front of me which when you are paddling up hill feels like you are dragging wet cement. It was nice to occasionally get up and over the runners but catching up to one towards the end of efforts really hurt, great training though.

A short rest after my third and final set meant I could paddle for one to two kms chasing runs and working on my linking which was great fun, just a pity that the closer to the point I got the more they fizzled out, again with it being as flat as a pond once I rounded the corner.

Fantastic views the entire paddle but pulling up on the beach pretty much right on sundown is always special.

As usual, I paddled my Fenn Elite S with my Gara Odin paddle and kitted out with my Sharkskin Rapid Dry shirt.
