Set on a secluded acre-and-a-half at the end of a quiet lane in Chevy Chase Canyon, the Crawford Residence is the personal home of Greg Crawford—a careful synthesis of preservation and modernist expansion.
An original 1940s structure was stripped to its studs and absorbed into a larger architectural composition, where orthogonal volumes, white plaster, and floor-to-ceiling glass introduce a distinctly International Style sensibility. The result is not a replacement, but a recalibration—where the existing and the new operate in balance.
Spatially, the house is organized through light and movement. Skylights wash interior walls, sliding glass panels open to patios and gardens, and water becomes a constant ambient presence across the site. The architecture extends outward, engaging a mature landscape of private gardens and a pool, reinforcing a quiet indoor–outdoor continuity.
Materially, the palette is restrained yet tactile: polished concrete, cork flooring, custom cabinetry, and precisely detailed fixtures. Despite its scale, the house remains approachable—warm, livable, and deeply considered.
Featured in the October 2006 issue of California Home + Design, the project reflects an architect designing for himself—measured, deliberate, and without excess.
