Step inside Rapor House (1977)—the only home architect Conrad Buff designed for himself.
This Buff & Hensman residence represents a major evolution in their work, shifting from light post-and-beam structures to a more grounded, sculptural form shaped by the energy-conscious design of the 1970s.
At the center of the home is a strong, symmetrical layout anchored by a tiled walkway that guides you from entry to living spaces and beyond. The stained glass doors by artist Judy Jensen—later restored by the artist herself—set the tone for a home deeply rooted in craftsmanship and care.
Inside, natural materials like redwood, teak, stucco, and glass create warmth and cohesion. Skylights wrap the perimeter, making the ceiling appear to float while bringing in soft, shifting daylight—earning the home its name, “Rapor” (House of the Sun).
Every detail is intentional—from built-in display shelving to jute-covered walls designed for rotating artwork. Downstairs, Buff’s original studio continues as a creative space, reflecting the home’s enduring purpose.
More than architecture, this is a living work of art—preserved and adapted over time by dedicated homeowners.
