"This was difficult to work with. I am really hoping I don't need to play Stress Level Zero's other games before I played this one. There are tons of references.
Now the gameplay is really unstable. The reason why I'm not holding back on the criticism because I KNOW SLZ can do better. I will admit, I played the bone series before recording this. Why? Because I was hoping I would be able to make this into a 100% run, but things broke down and I found more glitches instead.
Now don't get me wrong, I do like the physics in Boneworks. I like physics in general. It's been awhile since I played a modern game where the physics system is really good. I am very happy to say the physics get more stable in the sequel.
Now, stability. The BIGGEST complaint I have for this game. I can admit I am not the best fighter, I will look past the confusing lore, HOWEVER, if I have to fight the game engine to get it to do what I want, we have a problem. Things were so unstable, I was uncertain I was able to make this video. Please, please, please, for the love of the god you believe in, update it to stabilize it! The percentage of things breaking when I load into Boneworks directly and not SteamVR is way to high. Ex, if the controllers weren't on before going into the game, the player can't interact with the menu screen.
My second complaint is the use of ammo for currency. The game basically encourages you to not fire a single shot. That's why I was only using melee weapons on everything for most of the video. The only times I used firearms is because I had to or I was not in the mood to continuously die over and over.
Now as for the secret collectables, really wish you wouldn't need to carry then aaaaaaalll the way over to the end of the level to be able to use them in sandbox mode. It sounds like a fun challenge on paper but Half-Life 2: Episode 2 demonstrated that was a terrible idea. It is a tedious process to carry stuff, drop them off to the end of the level, go back to pick up more stuff, drop THEM off to the end of the level, repeat the process until the place is stripped clean. I am so happy the developers ditched this idea in the sequel.
Speaking of Valve products, Yup. This game feels like it got inspirations from the Half-Life series. There was even a direct reference in a form of a mug with a Black Mesa logo on it. I was told SLZ was in contact with Valve during a few points in development. So yeah, the crablest are tooooootallly not headcrabs from Half-Life. Nooooooo. I'm pretty sure Valve was telling SLZ to make the game more legally distinct because holy bananas.
Looking around in the community, some people like Boneworks more than it's sequel which is pretty much a tech demo. I am not one of those people. I will tell you why at the end of this.
Overall, I would get Bonelab instead. I know this may sound harsh, but that game is much more stable and since the community has already ported Boneworks into it, that was pretty much the metaphorical nail in the coffin for me. Bonelab has pretty much spoiled me with modding support but we'll get to that when that video comes out.
I do wish Boneworks got more maintenance. It's starting to feel like Half-Life: Source is more stable than it."
