Why is your career philosophy so important?
In this video, I'm going to unpack what a career philosophy is, why it's important, and ultimately how it helps you get, keep and grow brilliant people.
Hi, welcome to the Let's Talk Talent channel where we discuss the world of HR and talent management. We're here to help you unlock the potential in your people.
So what is a career philosophy? Is it just a load of words on a page? Or is it two or three pages, or even a booklet? It's none of the above. What it is,
is the foundation of what it means to be talent in your organisation. It really gives people the understanding of the deal. Why are they working for
you? What are they going to get? But also what can they expect?
So some of you will be watching this video and you'll be
thinking, Jo, it's all about the 70:20:10. That's a career philosophy, I don't need anything else. And in some ways, you're absolutely right.
70:20:10 is the foundation, but a career philosophy goes deeper.
In effect, it's the spine of what it means to be talent in your organisation.
And at Let's Talk Talent, we believe that everybody has talent, and everyone has potential. The question that a career philosophy helps you answer is: potential for what? What's the possibility? How can I move?
What are the skills? What are the experiences? And what's the
deal? What's the give, and what's the get?
So if you don't have a career philosophy, you might be thinking to yourself,
that's going to take me ages, I'm going to have to ask loads of people. But no, you've probably got all of the data at
your fingertips. So you'll have engagement surveys, you'll have
exit interviews, you'll have competency frameworks, leadership values. It's really simple: pulling all of that together is what makes you unique as an organisation.
Because what you want to be ensuring is that people understand why they're working for you, and the possibilities in which they can grow and
develop. If you don't lay that out, then they'll go to another organisation who will. So don't just dismiss a career philosophy as something it's a nice to have. Actually, it's the foundation of any great career planning process, but also can form the basis of your talent management, and your people and culture strategy.
