Do you have problems retaining top talent in your business?
Hi, welcome to the Let's Talk Talent channel where we discuss the world of HR and talent management. We're here to help you unlock the potential in your people.
Many of the organizations that we're working with at the moment are really struggling to retain their top talent. It's not enough to think about how you get, keep brilliant people, retention is the number one factor that separates the good from the great organizations.
Now, how are the great organizations doing it? Well, they're doing it through career development. Career development used to be about vertical progression. Now it's about horizontal movement or squiggly careers. And when you're thinking about squiggly careers, you're thinking about the world of possibilities. It's not just about progression to the next role. It's about where can your future talent take you?
And at LTT, we believe passionately that everyone has talent. The question that you want to ask in how you retain your top talent is "where can they go?" And by doing that, you're creating a simple, transparent and consistent way of enabling people to understand the skills, the experiences, the attributes, the relationships, ultimately, that they need to build to be successful in your organization.
Think about how you're giving transparency. So that might be competency frameworks, for example. And we use the STAR model: skills, training, attributes, and relationships, which really tell you the "what" and the "how", but you also want to think about your EVP. Think about how you're enabling people to understand where they fit into the organization and paint the possibilities.
But career development, and ultimately the squiggly career, is two things. First and foremost, it's having great career conversations. So are you equipping your managers to have great career conversations that are open, that people feel they can be themselves and there is the world of possibilities? But also, are you showing them? And that's where the career navigator comes into play. Are you showing them all the different options internally and externally?
So if you want to retain your top talent, career development is the key. So start unlocking that potential in your people.
