Are you using these top retention tools?

Are you thinking about how you retain brilliant people in your organisation? This video is going to explain all the tools and techniques that will help
you unlock the potential and performance in your people.

Hi, welcome to the Let's Talk Talent channel where we discuss the world of HR and talent management. We're here to help you unlock the potential in your people.

At Let's Talk Talent, we believe that everyone has potential, but how do you unlock it? That's the secret sauce, right? How do you get keep and grow brilliant people? In this video, we're really talking about how you
keep and grow, ultimately retaining, great people in your organisation.

And there's no silver bullet or one simple answer. It comes back to a article published in the Harvard Business Review in 2018, which looked at the three reasons why people work today. The first was career. And that really focuses on how people can understand the possibilities that are endless within your organisation. And ways in which you might, as an
HR team, really think about and lean into that career. It's about career mapping. It's performance. It's thinking about succession planning. It's
linking up your L&D. In effect, it's thinking about your organisational development. And that's how you keep people in terms of career.

The next was cause, and this is about purpose. So are you really
explaining to people the why? Why are they working for you? Do
you have a clear message? Is there clarity around what's expected, how you want them to do it – so your values, your competency frameworks – things that really enable people to understand and get behind the cause. Because if you understand the purpose, and why you're working for someone, and the contribution and the way that you're going to be measured, and you're going to get rewarded, then you're more likely to stick within that organisation, right?

And the third is community. And fundamentally, this is all about networks. And when we think about careers, it's all about stretch projects, formal
development, but the 20% – which people don't unlock – is networking. Now, I'm not talking about the 1980s, where we were all kind of networking, and it was loads of chat, I'm actually thinking about strategic
networking. And when I think about networking, it's much more about networking for the job that I have now, networking for the job that I have in the future, and networking for the development that I need.

So that could be mentoring, it could be coaching, it could be joining a
special interest group. It's not just about external – so the LinkedIns for example – or applying for a job on Indeed or looking on Glassdoor, actually who is the community that you have within your organisation that can help you develop your career?

So as an HR professional, really think about how you link career, community and cause because without it, you're not really telling people
why they should work for you, what the skills and attributes that they need to unlock, and what are the future possibilities that you can enable them to be.
