Are you pulling your hair out about how bad your managers are?
Do you want to really make them more motivating, inspiring, compassionate, empathetic? As an HR professional, here are some top tips that I think you can start to activate now.
Hi, welcome to the Let's Talk Talent channel where we discuss the world of HR and talent management. We're here to help you unlock the potential in your people.
Let's remember, people don't leave organisations, they leave bad managers. And there are many signs that you can look out for, and think about how you might train and develop your managers.
But I like to think about it in this way. So how do we go from good to great? It's not just about listening. It's not about communication. It's just not
about feedback. It's really thinking about what do you want your managers to do? And what you want them to do differently. So when I've been managed by really great people, they've taken their time to get to know me, they've really thought about what's my motivation, what's my driver, what's my energy? Where do I want to go, and how can they help me activate that?
And that's not something that you can just naturally train in a workshop, or a series of programmes. Actually, what you want to be thinking about are
some of the core skills and attributes that make a great manager. And we cover them in a lot in our Management Fundamentals programme. But some of those are really simple. And they start with "manager
mindset". What is the role of a manager? Do you understand
yourself? Because if you understand yourself, you can understand others. How do you motivate, engage your team? Do they understand what you stand for? And will they follow you? What's your purpose? Do you then
communicate effectively? So do you give feedback? Are you fair? Are you transparent? Are you authentic? All these things I think you can teach.
But one size doesn't fit all. Think about the time of life that
someone's in. Think about the transition that they're going
through, the persona. So could they be an aspiring manager, a new manager, an established leader? It's not just about courses that you put people on, is about the resources. How are you motivating? How are you
engaging, how are you empowering your managers? Because let's face it, being a manager at the moment is really, really tough.
So when you're thinking about the traits, the attributes, the skills, go back to the fundamentals of what you need them to do differently. Work out
your gap analysis: where you are and where you need them to be.
And then think about what are the resources that you can
activate, and inspire them.
