▬▬▬▬ Video Transcript ▬▬▬▬
Hi, this is Matt, and in this video, I’m going to show you how to add a new user in WordPress. I’m right here on the dashboard of one of my sites, Filmmaking Lifestyle. Your layout might look a little different, but the key principles are the same.
So, I’ve got this tidy sidebar over here, but if I click Show All, it’s going to expand and look a bit messier. The important thing is, you’re looking for the Users section, which is usually near the bottom of the sidebar. So, scroll down and click on All Users.
Once you’re on the Users screen, go to the top and click Add New User. This brings up a simple layout where you’ll need to fill in the required fields.
Username is required. For this example, let’s use demo.
Email is also required, as WordPress will send the password to the user’s email. Let’s use [email protected].
You can also fill in the First Name and Last Name fields if you want, but they’re optional. Same with the Website field.
Now, for the password. You can either enter one manually or generate a password using WordPress’s built-in generator. This will give you a randomly generated password that is typically quite strong—it’s alphanumeric and includes symbols, making it secure.
There’s also an option to send the user a notification. If this is someone on your team, you’ll want to check that box so WordPress emails them the password. Once they get it, they can change the password for added security, and even set up two-factor authentication if needed (though that’s beyond the scope of this video).
Next up is the Role selection. This is important. Depending on your setup and plugins, you may see different roles. For example, I have Shop Manager from WooCommerce and SEO Manager from my SEO plugin. The most powerful role is Administrator, which gives full access to your WordPress backend, so you need to be very careful about who you assign this to.
In most cases, you’ll be assigning roles like Author, Contributor, or even Custom roles created by plugins. For this example, we’re going to assign the new user the role of Contributor.
Once everything is filled out, click Add New User. That’s it! The new user is now created, and you can see them in the All Users tab. If you checked the box to send a notification, all the details will be emailed to the user, and they can log in and start working on the site.
