Red-bellied black snake foraging for food
I recently filmed this healthy looking Red-bellied black snake in Booderee Botanic Gardens searching for prey.
Red-bellied Black Snakes are one of the most frequently encountered snakes on the east coast of Australia, and are responsible for a number of bites every year.
Although its venom can cause significant illness, no deaths have been recorded from its bite, which is less venomous than other Australian elapid snakes. The venom contains neurotoxins, myotoxins, and coagulants and has haemolytic properties. Victims can also lose their sense of smell.
As always do not approach a snake and leave adequate distance and they will generally move on.
If you are concerned and encounter a snake around your property it is strongly advised to contact a professional snake catcher to have the snake relocated
