Downscaling Chronicles 7: Extron Super Emotia. Plug and Play 240p, better than the GBS Control?
The Extron Emotia/Super Emotia is a rare beast that can take a 480p input, and downscale to 480i and 240p with the flick of the non-interlace switch. It’s a true plug and play downscaler that requires no setup (just an HDMI to VGA DAC for the digital input), and no RGBHV sync combining. It’s also one of the few units to output composite and S-video, with selectable PAL 50Hz and NTSC 60Hz video formats. It sounds perfect, but how does it hold up against todays downscaling options? Most other scalers featured in the series are relatively easy to find and have superior features considering their cost, such as the Corio2 TVOne’s, GBS-C, OSSC Pro. Wih Extron Emotia’s sometimes selling for $300+ USD, would the money be better spent on a modern scaler such as the RetroTink 5x Pro or the OSSC Pro?
Like the GBS-Control, the Emotia’s inability to downscale 720p to 240p makes it somewhat outdated. Double downscaling with the GBS in episode 2 is revisited, this time using a primary downscaler with pictures controls that make the GBS and Emotia’s capable of downscaling a PS4 Pro and PS5. Oh, and Fortnite on a widescreen CRT is 😙🤌
