If you’re constantly pulling out or lugging around a retro console to use the 240p test suite, AND you’re testing a display that has component input, then this might be for you. The PSP 2000 was the first Sony PlayStation Portable model that supported 480p video output to an external display. The 3000 and PSPgo models would increase compatibility by adding an interlaced output option. Whilst PSP games and homebrew applications display in native resolution within a windowed area, PlayStation 1 games output in FULL 4:3 analog YPbPr, AND with the interlaced option they can display in 240p and 480i, depending on the original video encoding for the particular game. I didn’t test with composite video cables but they should work and if NTSC CVBS displays as it should, this could be THE most convenient and cheapest portable test console.

My curiosity to get this running actually stemmed from trying to get the test suite working on the PSIO; an ODE that plugs into the PlayStation’s parallel port. Once I discovered that there was a separate application for the Xstation, also compatible with PSone emulators, I converted this revision to eboot. Great success.

imbNES is an NES emulator that is almost as old as the PlayStation console and it plays NES games with extremely high accuracy in crisp 240p. I may revisit this emulator in a future video, as it’s worth showing due to modified NES consoles with component or RGB being rather involved to install. As the PlayStation’s tests suite was lacking in convergence patterns and Keith Raney’s monoscope pattern, I felt it was worth having the NES 240pee rom in the portable toolkit of fullscreen test suites that can output in clear component video using the aforementioned models of the PSP handhelds.

This is also a great way to test 480p or multi-format CRT’s like the PVM 20L5 and the BVM D20. Set the PSP’s video output option to Progressive and it’ll output 480p.

I did not take any part in creating the 240p test suite as I merely converted the existing PSX emulator-friendly iso to eboot as well as the imbNES eboot containing the NES 240pee roms.
