My DIY free-wheeling HUB SPANNER | 4x4 world
I drive an old Isuzu and to engage the 4x4 I have to manually lock the free-wheeling hubs and I don't have a spanner... So I made one DIY! My design criteria were that it needed to be small enough to fit neatly behind the seat and made up of scraps from old projects. intended to make a quick tool and a video about the fabrication using an hour of my time. I rushed it so much I forgot to film in landscape mode. Luckily IGTV exists, and my friends watching this.
For those of you who don't know why I have to lock my hubs here is a quote from Wikipedia.
"Locking hubs, also known as free wheeling hubs are fitted to some (mainly older) four-wheel drive vehicles, allowing the front wheels to rotate freely when disconnected (unlocked) from the front axle."
It has been wet on the KZN South Coast recently and I have had to engage 4x4 more often than usual. When it is cold it can be difficult to turn the hubs and I don't want to get caught out in a slippery situation. I recently bought a small MIG welder so I decided to make a tool that would make sure I didn't end up stuck.
I used a short piece of metal rod that came off of the harvest trailer I refurbished before lockdown and a galvanized irrigation sleave from one of my earlier ram pumps. I carefully ground off any galvanizing from the weld zones before welding. I didn't attempt any perfection in this project because I wanted to rapidly make a functional item that would last. The tool itself will not fail during its intended use and I am sure of that. Sometimes getting a farm project done means doing it quick and dirty.
I feel like this was a good hour spent.
