Patients with Covid-19 in severe condition can develop an overly strong and uncontrolled immune system response called cytokines’ storm which affects their lungs and can cause multisystem organ failure and even death. Respiratory distress and blood flow disturbances are commonly seen symptoms.
Several studies have confirmed the effectiveness of corticosteroids like dexamethasone to lower the immune response and reduce the risk of cytokines' storm.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has published new treatment guidelines and strongly recommended the use of these treatments for seriously ill patients.
WHO warns against the use of steroids in patients who are not seriously ill who might suffer from unwanted side effects.
