SB217 Rally in Colorado Springs
On June 20 at City Hall in Colorado Springs.... this was a commemoration of De’Von Bailey and celebration the passage of the state’s Law Enforcement Accountability Act, which Gov. Polis signed on Juneteenth, June 19.
Speakers included State Rep. Leslie Herod, Attorney Mari Newman, State Reps. Tony Exum and Mark Snyder, Attorney Dan Kay, Dr. Rev. Stephany Rose Spaulding and De'Von Bailey's mother, sister and father.
SB217 is the first in the nation to eliminate the qualified immunity defense that protects cops from lawsuits, it also bans chokeholds, limits other uses of force, prohibits cops from aiming tear gas and rubber bullets at protesters’ heads, pelvises or backs, requires all cops wear body cameras and unedited footage must be released to the public within 21 days of the filing of misconduct complaints and grand juries are required to release reports when they decide against charging cops.
Governor Polis signed the bill on Juneteenth.
