A Day with Volunteers: Improving the Bike Trails in Skálafell
SEEDS 037. Hitting the Slopes - Blue Mountains & Skálafell (2/2)
On July 12, SEEDS' volunteers started the Hitting the Slopes camp, the second one this summer. They spent the first week of the camp working on the slopes in Skálafell and the second one in Bláfjöll (the Blue Mountains).
This video shows what kind of work the volunteers did in Skálafell.
Skálafell, a remnant of the now dormant Stardalur volcano, is thought to be approximately 1.8 million years old. The mountain joins to the eastern side of Esjan, the tabletop mountain range that can be seen from Reykjavík. During winter, Skálafell's ski resort attracts skiers and snowboarders, whereas during summer, it turns into a bike park. The bike park was built in 2010 and was the first one of its kind in Iceland. It has several trails, the longest of which 2.4 km, with different difficulty levels, suitable for both beginners and more advanced riders.
