EASY! How to Paint Mushroom Gills and Mushroom Caps in Watercolor
Hey watercolor friends! 🎨
Mushrooms are such a FUN subject for practicing fun watercolor techniques, and today we're painting two very different views - one that's nice and easy, and one that's... well, let's just say it's a good challenge!
We've got one mushroom where you can see the top of the cap (super straightforward), and another where you see the underside with all those gills radiating out. That underside view can be intimidating. I looked long and hard for a tutorial that walked me through what I was looking for. I couldn't seem to find what I needed. So, I spent a day painting a couple dozen mushroom caps and came up with this video to help YOU paint the "suggestion" of those mushroom gills.

Painting the challenging underside of a mushroom cap with all those delicate gills and radiating lines
The much easier top-view mushroom and why it's a great confidence builder
Using salt to create realistic mushroom texture and organic spots
How to use blooms intentionally instead of fighting them (they're perfect for mushrooms!)
Lifting out color to define positive shapes and add dimension to your mushrooms
The magic here is embracing all those "happy accidents" that watercolor gives us. Those blooms and salt textures? Perfect for mushrooms! And lifting out color is such a powerful technique for creating definition without adding more paint. You're going to love how forgiving and fun this painting is!
