Hey watercolor friends! 🎨
If you've ever wondered why your fruit paintings look flat instead of juicy and realistic, this video is for YOU! Today we're diving deep into highlights and shadows while painting strawberries and kiwi, and I'm showing you the real process - including watching me rework those kiwi shadows multiple times until they finally have the right depth.
Highlights and shadows are what transform a painting from "meh" to "WOW!" They're what make your fruit look round, shiny, and good enough to eat. But getting them right takes practice and sometimes a lot of adjusting!
In this tutorial, I'm walking you through:
How to identify and preserve your brightest highlights to make fruit look three-dimensional and juicy
Understanding shadow values and why they're just as important as your highlights
Techniques for building up layers to achieve the right depth in your shadows
The relationship between highlights and shadows, and how they work together to create form
Why I kept reworking those kiwi shadows until the values finally felt right
You'll watch me work and rework sections - especially those tricky kiwis - as I build up the shadows and make sure the highlights are doing their job. This is the real, sometimes messy process of getting a watercolor painting to look right, and I think seeing the struggle makes it so much more helpful!
