Should older content creators bother with TikTok?
I'm not a fan of TikTok, being born in the '70s and all. But I decided to give it a shot and experiment with my short-form content. I took the same videos I posted on my YouTube channel as Shorts and uploaded them to my TikTok account to see what would happen. To my surprise, one of my videos got over 40,000 views, gained followers, and received hundreds of comments. I think I used specific hashtags targeted towards people my age and the platform delivered.
However, my experience with TikTok has been hit or miss. On one of my channels, I had a video that gained over 2 million views and thousands of subscribers, but the subsequent videos I uploaded didn't do as well. It seems to be a numbers game on TikTok, and I haven't been able to sustain my success, but I also haven't been consistent with it. For your niche, it might be worth searching TikTok and seeing if your audience is there. TikTok has the potential to build an audience as it quickly learns what topics you're interested in and suggests more videos for you to watch. Ultimately, it's about understanding your audience and who you're talking to, so TikTok might be a platform to explore if your audience is present.
