A vane shear test on soft soil (clay) is used in civil engineering, especially geotechnical engineering, in the field to estimate the strength of soft moist soil like clay or silt. The vane shear is gently inserted in the soft soil (mostly moist clay) so that the blades are covered by the soil. Keep it perpendicular to the ground. Gently and slowly rotate the handle of the vane shear with one revolution per minute until no more soil resistance is felt. Record the value in kPa.
