Soil is classified using the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) in geotechnical engineering and civil engineering practices. This classification is based on the amount of fines (such as silt and clay) and coarse-grained material (such as gravel and sand), soil plasticity or gradation. Three examples are given: Soil A (0:28), coarse-grained material is classified based on the gradation. Soil B (5:39) and Soil C (8:20) are plastic soils and are classified based on their plasticity. Soil classification is performed for civil engineering projects that include soil and earth structures. It is part of soil mechanics investigation and is conducted by a geotechnical engineer.
