Throughout our tenure here at the iPhone App Review, we have seen many trends come and go. Not least of these is the match-three genre of iPhone gaming. It expanded with a vengeance several years back, and has only been gaining more and more ground ever since. And we absolutely, positively can not get enough of it!
If that’s got you interested, then head on down below the break for our full review of the brand new, endlessly endearing Gems Smash. The game shares a lot with its forebearers, but it is still every bit as exciting and energizing as you’re hoping.

As you might expect from a review with the title title given above, you can expect a lot of Candy Crush style gameplay out of Gems Smash. However, it would be wholly unfair to say that one is a rip off of the other. In fact, Gems Smash offers a totally different set of desirables, and plenty of reason to see it as its own, unique title.
For instance, the game has you doing a whole lot more than just matching up items to knock them out in combos. Though, you will be spending a lot of time doing just that. In addition, however, you can also enjoy the game’s copious, roleplaying-esque mechanics. You see, all those points you accumulate are more than just glittering trophies. Using what you’ve earned, you can unlock additional lives, combination boosters, and several more delightful fun-enhancers. These also include several area-of-effect options, producing wicked multiple blasts, earning you even more points and glory along the way.
Lastly, the game introduces a “battle” effect. Think of this as a race to win more points than your opponent. It’s fun and enlivening, and at the very least, it offers a fresh take on a very well-trodden field.
gems-smash-1It also helps that Gems Smash looks as good as it does. This is not a cheap knock-off of a much more popular title. Rather, it is clear the developers have thought a great deal about cultivating a cute, inviting air for the player to enjoy. The items you’ll be collecting are vibrant and easily spotted, while the various characters you’ll encounter are equally so.
Not to mention the fact the game is so easy to pick up on! We hardly had any trouble at all picking up the pieces. Though, if you become confused, Gems Smash is more than happy to walk you through the basics again. It’s impossible to mess-up, which makes the fun contained here are the more real.
Better still, Gems Smash is completely free to play in the iTunes App Store. Now, we’re particularly cheap, but that should be the kind of bargain that appeals to just about any gamer. No matter if you’re an existing fan of the genre, or just someone looking to have a bit of fun this afternoon, Gems Smash is a solid winner.
