Let's define some terms we'll use today.
The first term is Multicast. Multicast is a term that describes when a station addresses packets that are destined for multiple, but not all, end stations on a network.
Next is resource discovery, which is the ability of network devices to discover other network devices. The devices that typically use resource discovery are switches, routers, DHCP servers, and DNS servers. IP multicast is typically used for the resource discovery function.
Our next term is multicast group, which is collection of stations that all need to receive the same multicast traffic. For example, if 7 stations all need to see a particular video conferencing presentation, they are all placed in the video conference multicast group.
