Hey there folks, today is all about improving the environment for our little hens and the first thing we need to do is to make them some deeper little inside the main coop! Once I gathered all the leaves & lawn clippings from the chicken run, the new floor was at least 4 inches higher than before so that's a good start. We can always pick up more wood shavings as the winter progresses to add more depth once it's needed.
After that, it became about trying to get these hens up to the higher perch for nighttime roosting. For the last few nights I've been placing the hens on a roost in the coop that's about a foot from the floor but I would prefer them to be up on the larger on that's about 3 feet off the ground. Since their feathers haven't yet grown back in, I felt the easiest way to make that happen was to make them a ramp from the floor. I suspect it still needs a few touch ups but basically it should do the trick ... I hope ...
