For Murdoch, ATTENTION is "a fair and loving gaze". Through Attention we gain a deeper understanding of other persons, and this enables us to make ethical decisions in a deeper way.
Iris Murdoch (1917-1999) was an Irish-British philosopher and novelist. She was born in Dublin, studied philosophy at Cambridge, and became a philosophy professor at Oxford. She gained fame for her many novels.
The interview with Karin Fechner is based on Murdoch's essay "The idea of perfection", first published in 1964, and republished in her book "The Sovereignty of the Good" in 1970.
