A microprocessor is a powerful, general-purpose CPU needing external RAM, ROM, and peripherals, ideal for PCs and servers, while a microcontroller integrates a CPU, memory, I/O ports, and peripherals onto a single chip, making it a self-contained mini-computer perfect for specific, low-power embedded systems like washing machines or remote controls. The key difference is integration: microcontrollers have everything on-chip (CPU, memory, I/O), while microprocessors are just the CPU, requiring external components for a complete system.

Microprocessor (µP)
Focus: High performance, complex calculations, general computing.
Components: CPU (ALU, Control Unit, Registers) only.
Memory/Peripherals: Requires external RAM, ROM, I/O chips.
Architecture: Often Von Neumann.
Applications: Personal Computers, Servers, Smartphones.
Characteristics: More powerful, higher clock speeds, complex, higher cost, higher power.

Microcontroller (µC)
Focus: Specific, real-time control tasks, embedded applications.
Components: CPU, RAM, ROM, I/O ports, Timers, ADC all on one chip.
Memory/Peripherals: Internal/On-chip.
Architecture: Often Harvard.
Applications: Washing machines, remote controls, automotive systems, IoT devices.
Characteristics: Lower power, simpler, cost-effective, compact, lower processing power.
