RBA Rate Decision, Bezos Sells $3 Billion Worth of AMZN Shares & U.S. Election Awaits!
Today is a pivotal day for global markets, with two major events on the horizon: the Reserve Bank of Australia's (RBA) interest rate decision at 2:30 p.m. (Australia time) and the U.S. presidential election later tonight at 9 p.m. These events will likely drive significant market volatility.
Starting with the RBA, expectations are leaning toward maintaining the current rate of 4.85%. Despite some calls for rate cuts, I don't foresee any reduction this year. Inflation remains stubbornly high, particularly in the core CPI, which keeps pressure on the RBA to maintain its stance. Even as inflation has shown signs of easing, the rate is still too high for comfort, leaving little room for aggressive changes. With only two more meetings this year, I expect the RBA to keep rates steady, further weakening the Australian dollar.
The Aussie dollar has already been under pressure, currently trading around 0.6582, down from previous highs of 0.6946. My target for the Aussie against the U.S. dollar is in the range of 0.6240-0.6540. The ongoing monetary policy uncertainty will likely drive this decline further.
Turning to the U.S. presidential election, it’s set to shake the market tonight. A win by Kamala Harris would likely weaken the U.S. dollar, while a Trump victory would strengthen it. Interestingly, Trump’s odds have shifted from nearly 70% last Friday to around 56% today, bringing him almost neck and neck with Harris. With market sentiment in flux, any surprise election outcome could send shockwaves through the currency market.
Also, it's worth noting that Jeff Bezos recently sold a massive $3 billion worth of Amazon shares. Does he know something the rest of us don’t? This kind of insider move always raises eyebrows ahead of such key events.
