While Tor promises internet access with relative privacy, it's not perfect. Tor users have been unmasked in recent cases involving police using timing attacks to defeat the anonymization platform.
Because timing attacks rely on authorities needing to control a significant amount of nodes, Tor believes its users to be relatively safe from attacks based on public information.
