It is safe to exercise during pregnancy but there are some guidelines that you really need to be aware of. The general rule of thumb is that if you are at all unsure, stop and seek medical advice.
1. The first and most important thing is that you check with your doctor or midwife before starting and exercise programme. If you have already seen them, it is likely to ascertain if you have any conditions that are not conducive to exercise. If you have one of these conditions, then your GP or midwife will have said that you cannot exercise. If you are at all unsure, go back to them and double check.
2. Make sure that the environment you are in is conducive to exercise. It needs to be well ventilated. Your core body temperature gets a lot higher in pregnancy and it's really important that you don't allow it to get too high.
3. Make sure that your clothing is really comfortable to exercise in.
4. Wear suitable trainers and footwear
5. Wear a supportive and comfortable fitted bra
6. Drink water before, during and after exercise
6. Eat within 2 hours of exercise or have a snack with you just in case you need to keep your blood sugar up
7. Listen to your body
8. Never sacrifice sleep for exercise.
9. If you feel any aches or pains, stop readjust, listen to what we are saying in the classes, and make sure that you can continue pain free. You might need to completely stop for that session and get some extra help. If it is really mild, you might be able to try one of our masterclasses to perfect your technique. It might be that you can continue on then with the exercise.
10. If the pain is continuing after you have stopped exercising, then you really need to question why that pain is there. You need to go and get some medical help.
11. If you are at all unsure, stop and seek medical advice.
12. If the following things happen you much stop and seek urgent medical help: dizzy / fainting, extreme shortness of breath, any vagainal bleeding, sudden water discharge, any signs of labor, extreme headaches, if you notice decreased fetal movement, check pains, calf pain or swelling.
If you listen to all of this advice then you can carry on with this exercise programme.
