During this Lunch & Learn Kevin Whitbeck, Director of SEO at Results Repeat, provides insights into SEO and some free SEO tools the professionals use that even beginners can use for their SEO campaigns. Including Google My Business, Google Analytics, SEMrush, Screaming Frog, and more.
Google tools are the best place to start. Google has 88% market share worldwide and it is a household name for almost everyone. Google provides Webmaster Guidelines which covers General, Content Specific, and Quality guidelines. Following these is imperative to digital marketing success. Some websites are human assessed for these guidelines and can be manually given penalties for breaking the guidelines or trying to spam the system.
The free SEO tools Kevin talks about in this Lunch and Learn and more, are mentioned in a blog post by Results Repeat. https://resultsrepeat.com/10-free-seo...
Google Analytics -https://analytics.google.com/
This tool will provide you with all the data you can use and more. There are a lot of tracking tools that are more user friendly but if you learn Google Analytics, it’s free and can save you money on analyzing all the data to your website or app.
Analyze historical and real-time traffic performance and engagement.
See the volume of traffic coming to your website from different digital marketing channels.
Analyze individual or groups of pages to see what content users find most valuable.
Track increases and decreases when you remove, add, or update content.
Track your conversions!
Google Search Console - https://search.google.com/search-cons...
Track keywords
Page Rankings
Backlinks and Internal Links
Enhanced report around Schema and Rich Results
Sitemaps
And the new feature – Core Web Vitals which is a user experience metric Google announced they use for ranking your website in search results or SERPs.
Google Trends – https://trends.google.com/trends/
Search volume is an important part of SEO and digital marketing. Google Trends is real-time data around topical search phrases, current popularity, historical trend data, and estimated trend data. You can build your content strategy around using this tool. Example would be optimizing an e-commerce store before the trend starts to climb in order to give your site the ranking signals when the search trend begins.
WooRank Chrome Extension – https://chrome.google.com/webstore/de... This tool will give you an overall score on your page with areas that passed, needs improvement, errors, and information to help you repair them. This tool breaks down the specifics of SEO with some technical data to help you understand how SEO works.
Answer the Public - https://answerthepublic.com/
What questions are people asking around a specific keyword or topic? This tool uses Google data to provide you questions around that keyword or topic. This is a great way to develop content for a blog or videos to answer popular user questions.
SEMrush – https://www.semrush.com/
Free version is limited in the data it will provide and they do not allow free accounts to use certain tools. You can use the free version for keyword research, competitor research, and more. It may be one of the best tools to use within your SEO campaign and if you have the budget, should be an option to utilize the premium features.
Screaming Frog – https://www.screamingfrog.co.uk/seo-s...
This tool limits the crawls to 500 pages in the free version. There is a lot of technical data with this tool and should be used when you understand more about SEO and how the backend of websites work with search engines.
GTMetrix and Pingdom – https://gtmetrix.com/
These tools provide you insights into how fast your page/website loads. The waterfall feature gives an in-depth look into what may be slowing things down and how to repair them. Google Page Speed Insights also is free and provides value but doesn’t provide the waterfall feature which we recommend.
Use the tools to make informed decisions. Data is your friend and should be used within your digital marketing strategy. Some of these tools require signing up and the browser extensions may require cookies to be enabled. Remember SEO is a long-term game.
