Yes, we know—we’ve made another Budi post. But can you blame us? Budi is the perfect example of a beautiful orangutan that beat the odds and returned to the wild! All thanks to the hard work of the BKSDA and our partners at YIARI!
For an orangutan to be ready for release, they need to go through multiple rehabilitative stages suited to their age and experience. YIARI calls these stages ‘schools’. Budi started his journey in ‘Pre-School’ and ‘Baby School’ before being moved to ‘Forest School’. He was then taken to a ‘Pre-release’ island where his natural behavior was closely monitored by a team of keepers to ensure he had the necessary skills to survive in the wild. These are skills he learned throughout his entire rehabilitation at YIARI’s rescue center.
This entire process took almost 10 years! This is the time between his rescue by the BKSDA all the way until he was released by them in 2023!
It was a lengthy process, but it was absolutely worth it! There’s nothing more amazing than seeing an animal return to its natural habitat.
