Meet Gito, just one of 68 orangutans at YIARI’s rescue center. He was rescued by the BKSDA in 2015 from a situation where he was being kept as a pet.
Upon arrival, they found him inside a filthy cardboard box, severely dehydrated, malnourished, and suffering from sarcoptic mange—a highly contagious skin disease that caused intense pain and irritation.
The BKSDA immediately took Gito to our partners at YIARI’s rescue center, where their medical team sprang into action, providing the urgent, costly care he so desperately needed.
Thanks to the incredible care provided by YIARI, Gito has made great progress over the last 9 years. He is strong, healthy and able to swing through the trees effortlessly. He is one of the more advanced orangutans at the center and continues to make fantastic progress.
Each day at YIARI’s rescue center costs $5,714 / £4,501 to operate, providing essential medical treatments and care for orangutans like Gito as well as countless other initiatives such as habitat protection and community outreach.
