So, what will a convergence protocol look like? Well, some will look just as they always have. Ethernet, IP, DHCP and DNS-type protocols will continue to exist pretty much as they always have, and will support IP voice in the same way they have always supported IP data. Some minor changes may be made to support some of the QoS and voice-specific requirements, but the protocols will pretty much look the same.

Some QoS-specific protocols will also need to be modified, and newer types of QoS protocols will be developed to handle some of voice communication's specific needs. And finally, there will be new protocols added. These new protocols will at first seem foreign to many people, and, just like any new technology, they'll take some getting used to by both data and voice professionals.

These new protocols are the protocols that will allow IP devices to setup, maintain and break down IP phone calls. They'll also allow IP phones to coexist in environments with legacy-type phones and protocols.
In the next few sections, we'll talk about some of these new protocols.
