How do I decrease on the purl side of my knitting? (P2tog and P2tog TBL)

On the knit side of our work, we're accustomed to performing decreases like K2tog (knit 2 together) or SSK (slip slip knit). On the purl side, how do we perform neat and tidy decreases so that they'll slant to the right or left when viewed from the knit side?
