Education officer Emmanuel Bua says the district is concerned and is rolling out several initiatives to improve performance. According to statistics, there has been a 7.7% improvement in the latest PLE results.
This concern has resonated with members of the public, who feel deeply impacted by the district’s overall performance. Florence Ongina Adupa, who has expressed interest in contesting for the Lira District Woman Member of Parliament seat, recently rewarded the district’s top-performing pupils. She says this initiative aims to motivate both learners and parents to prioritize education and work harder to improve academic outcomes.

The Chairperson LC III of Agweng Sub County welcomed the latest results, noting that past performance had been much lower. He commended community leaders like Ongina for their dedication to improving education. He also emphasized the sub-county’s commitment to supporting high-achieving girls in second grade to ensure they continue with their studies.

Despite these efforts, Lira District continues to grapple with challenges such as high dropout rates, absenteeism, and inadequate support structures. Statistics indicate that 584 pupils failed completely with Division U, while only 1,451 girls passed, underscoring a persistent gender gap in completion rates. Furthermore, despite Lira District having 68 schools and over 64,000 pupils enrolled, a recent headcount revealed that only half were present in school. – Ends –
