Besides importing the mesh and texturing data from real-world environments, the SCAN2FX for Unreal plug-in offers various helper tools for virtual production workflows for VFX, TV and other media productions.
For example, “Move Actor” to current Camera Position allows placing an object at a specific camera location. When using a tracking system, the camera could be moved to the right location on set, to then place a virtual set extension at that location. This way virtual items can be quickly and accurately aligned with a real-world set.
When importing scanned meshes that got dropped into the scene, they may end up in a different coordinate system than your original scans. Reset Actor to 0,0,0 allows you to quickly reset a mesh to a zero stage for coordinate system alignment with imported scans or other elements.
“Create Set Opening” will open up your “virtual set” at the current camera location. This allows you to pierce through a scanned environment to place a camera, for example, where there was previously a wall. This enables quick creation of typical shots in scanned environments where all sides are obstructed. The “set opening” can be moved around to make adjustments.
The SCAN2FX tools enable a rapid turn-around from real-world environments to virtual sets for pre-visualizations. Higher resolution meshes can also be created with SCAN2FX Mesh Modeler to enable offline rendering of the same scenes with higher quality as needed.
