Francis Scott Key Bridge: Baltimore, Maryland
March 26th, 2024 will go down in history for the City of Baltimore and the State of Maryland. The Francis Scott Key Bridge opened to traffic on March 23rd, 1977, and just days after its 47th birthday, a cargo ship struck the bridge, causing the bridge to collapse. On the bridge were eight construction workers, six of which were killed in the collapse. The bridge had a length of 1.6 miles long with a clearance of 185 feet, making it the 8th largest of its type in the United States. This bridge has held a special place in the hearts of Baltimoreans and surrounding communities. This collapse has been devastating to the City of Baltimore and the State of Maryland as a whole. Until the channel can be cleared, the Port of Baltimore will be shut down to ship traffic which will disrupt commerce for the whole country.
This video was filmed on November 25th, 2022 when I last traversed this bridge. On several occasions, I've visited Fort Armistead Park to get photos of the bridge in the early morning light. The same light that Francis Scott Key himself would have experienced to see that Star Spangled Banner yet wave. I've shared photos I took on February 19th, 2022 and April 2nd, 2023 at the end of the video, along with photos that I took today at Fort McHenry.
