How to do simple competitor research for SEO

By now you should have your list of keywords, groups and worked out which will be your primary keywords.

You now need to work out exactly how we’re going to target the keywords. You need to look at what kind of content we need to create.

Without doing competitor research you will stand little chance of ranking above your competitors. This step does take time, but it needs to be done and done right.

First, you will need to put your keyword into a Google search. You will need to take out a notepad and analyse the page one search results. You need to look at each page that’s ranking and note things like:

What type of page is it?
How much text is on this page?
How many images do they use?
Does it have video?
What headings do they use?
How many times do they repeat certain keywords?
Do they have a map?
Do they have special features?
What’s the layout like?

All of this should be written down and you will begin to build up a picture of what your page should be like.

The idea here is not to simply copy what everyone else is doing but to look to see how you can improve on it.

Some more questions to ask would be:

Do they waffle on about irrelevant stuff?
Is the content thin?
Could you add more detail to it?
Could you create content that gets to the point quicker and cuts out the rubbish?
What features could you add that would give a better experience?

This is a fairly simple process that can be time-consuming but must be done.

Remember Google is essentially telling you what it wants to see on its page one search results. If you go creating something entirely different it’s likely you will not rank.
