A beginner’s tutorial to keyword research using SEMrush
Finding the right keywords to target is one of the most critical parts of any SEO campaign.
If you get it wrong, you could spend a lot of time money and effort ranking the wrong keywords.
This would mean the wrong people are visiting your website and any traffic is wasted.
To ensure this doesn’t happen you must first understand the different search intent keywords can have.
1) Informational - The searcher is looking for information.
2) Navigational - The searcher is looking for a specific website.
3) Commercial investigation - The searcher is in the market for a specific product or service but has yet to make a final decision on which solution is right for them.
4) Transactional - The searcher is looking to make a purchase.
Once you understand what kind of keyword you need to be using you should start by brainstorming seed keywords. Try to think of any short and obvious keywords your customers might type on to find your services.
Type these keywords into a Google search and look at what comes up. Then copy and paste the URLs of your competitors who are currently ranking on page one into a keyword research tool such as SEMrush.
This will allow you to see every keyword they currently rank for. From this, you can then start creating a list of keywords that you could target. Repeat this process for as many other keywords as you feel necessary.
Also, take advantage of SEMrush’s keyword magic tool. Type a relevant keyword into it and look for more keywords you could add to your list.
Once you’re happy with your list download the list onto an excel sheet and Delete the columns you don’t need.
This is basic keyword research and for there you can go on and create keyword groups, keyword mapping and analysing the keywords in more detail.
