The New Style of the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI) was once a serious threat in West Kalimantan.
Sayyid Ahmad Sofyan Baraqbah was a member of parliament during the Sukarno era and the person most responsible for the New Style of the PKI ideology as its leader.
Syarif Ahmad Sofyan Al Barakbah, or S.A. Sofyan, was supported by the Sarawak People's Guerrilla Force (PGRS) and the North Kalimantan People's Force (Paraku).
To destroy him, Operation Clean III was launched in February 1969.
Then, on January 12, 1974, RPKAD troops successfully discovered S.A. Sofyan Baraqbah's hideout.
According to testimony from several local residents at the time, S.A. Sofyan possessed black magic. He could disappear, was impervious to bullets, and did many other things. He was nicknamed a "ghost," but this was a power of ancient supernatural powers.
Sayid Ahmad Sofyan Baraqbah was the first person Brigadier General Seno Hartono sought when he led the XII Tanjungpura Military Command in early 1973.
Brigadier General Seno then called on everyone in West Kalimantan to capture, dead or alive, S. Ahmad Sofyan, Chairman of the West Kalimantan Regional CDB Committee-PKl.
This call from the Commander-in-Chief was not simply an order from the Regional Commander of the Security and Order Restoration Command (Pkopkamtibda), but rather a message from General Soemitro, Commander of the Operational Command for the Restoration of Security and Order, that this man had haunted West Kalimantan for more than eight years.
Within 100 days of Brigadier General Seno Hartono replacing Major General Drs. Soemadi as Commander of the XII/Tanjungpura Military Command, he had captured him.
Seno used this 100-day period to gather information, determine Sofyan's position, and carry out his capture.
The 100-day deadline was later relaxed by the Commander of the First Regional Defense Command (Pangkowilhan I) until the end of 1973.
To capture this fugitive by the end of 1973, Brigadier General Seno Hartono was forced to dig deeper.
Therefore, before beginning his special task of capturing Sofyan, Major Sutarno, Commander of the "Kala Hitam" Detachment of the Indonesian Army (RPKAD), was instructed to find members closest to S.A. Sofyan.
The RPKAD major then succeeded in developing one of Sofyan's closest friends, Dji Lou.
It was from Dji Lou that the "Kala Hitam" troops traced Sofyan's trail.
It turned out that Dji Lou was no ordinary person. Besides being a former member of Sofyan's forces, he was also close to S.A. Sofyan's other bodyguards.
When Dji Lou was used as bait by Major Sutarno to be stationed in the Terentang area of Pontianak Regency, one night he was visited by a visitor, an old friend.
The guest who came to Dji Lou's hut in the middle of the forest was Lo Hin, also known as Acin.
Lo Hin, who usually carried a pistol and a machete, was one of Sayid Ahmad Sofyan's bodyguards, along with Ramang, also known as A Siong, and A Tet, who are still at large.
In fact, since October 4, 1973, Lo Hin had been told that only three bodyguards remained to accompany Sofyan, who was already in and out of the forest.
But Lo Hin didn't believe him and remained silent during questioning in the Terentang area.
Before revealing Sofyan's hiding place, that night, Lo Hin was given the opportunity to "meet" with his wife in his room for approximately three hours.
After emerging from the room, beaming from having not seen his lover for years, Lo Hin began to explain where S.A. Sofyan was hiding.
The forest in the Terentang area had not yet been touched by timber entrepreneurs and was still quiet.
The dark and cold night of January 11th, at 10:00 PM, created a tense and eerie atmosphere.
Using dugout canoes, 12 members of the Kala Hitam (Black Knights of the Indonesian Army) departed from Terentang towards the Asam River. As darkness grew, making it difficult to determine the river's course, Lieutenant Sutiono, the leader of the ambush team, ordered his men to spend the night on the banks of the Sapar River.
Because S.A. Sofyan's hiding place was nestled in the middle of dense forest, the ambush team had to arrive while the sun was still bright.
In this forest, it was still dark in the morning due to fog, and in the evening, the sunlight could no longer penetrate the dense undergrowth.
So, the next day, January 12th, 1974, at 9:00 AM, the "Kala Hitam" troops, who also had Lo Hin as their guide, continued their journey on foot, through the impenetrable thickets and swamps.
There were three spots in the area where Sofyan frequently occupied.
First, the banks of the Kelabau River where Sofyan usually fished, second, Sofyan's guard post, and finally, his own camp.
Because Sofyan was not accustomed to sleeping on the riverbank where he fished, Lieutenant Sutiono planned an ambush from behind.
